What is movember?
If you’ve never heard of “Movember,” just keep an eye out for an unusual amount of facial hair on men – in particular their mustaches. This isn’t a randomly happening phenomenon because men are particularly lazy in November or they’re spontaneously choosing to sport a new style. It’s done to raise awareness of men’s health issues, the most prominent being prostate and testicular cancer.
A little history on the subject.
“Movember” was started by a group of young men in Adelaide, South Australia back in 2003. They were discussing fashion trends and wondered where men’s outlandish mustache’s had gone. Inspired by the success of women’s breast cancer awareness campaigns, 30 gentlemen joined together to bring back the mustache and raise some money for a good cause.
Over the years the tradition stuck around and has continued to grow (no pun intended). Since those first few years there are now over 21 countries participating to fund over 1,000 men’s health programs. Passionate about making a change or getting involved? There are tons of ways to do this! Both Mo Bro’s and Mo Sistas can donate, grow a stache, find a local event and participate.
Most guys who participate in Movember don’t even know why they are doing so – so spread the word!
